Chula Vista FC, which was initially formed as a youth soccer organization, have made huge waves in the senior soccer scene following the creation of the team in 2011.
Some of the names which have passed through the City of Chula Vista include Alejandro Guido, Paul Arriola, Joe Corona, Gabriel Farfan and Michael Farfan. These players have gone on to play for top professional clubs in the Mexican Liga MX and Major League Soccer.
However, Chula Vista FC has enjoyed some great success of its own in recent years.
One of the most notable performances came in the 2015 Lemar Hunt US Open Cup. Chula Vista FC defeated United Soccer League’s Arizona United 3-0 in that tournament, which was a massive upset against a professional soccer club.
While that brought a lot of media attention to Chula Vista FC, it was not a trophy, and nothing beats winning competitions and picking up trophies. Having formed just seven years ago, Chula Vista FC First Team does not have a long history to look back on, and the current team is responsible for creating the history which future players and fans will view with pride in years to come.
The 2018 Cal South Adult State Cup provided Chula Vista FC with the opportunity to show they could compete at the highest level in the region and perhaps add some silverware to the trophy cabinet. The tournament started with 16 teams, and they were divided into four groups, each with four teams.
The teams played each other once, with the top two teams going through to the quarter-final stage.
Chula Vista FC was grouped with San Nicolas FC, Traviesos and SFV Scorpions. Chula Vista picked up wins against Traviesos and SFV Scorpions but struggled against San Nicolas FC, who went on to top the group, winning all three of their matches.
Chula Vista FC defeated SFV Scorpions 3-1 in the first match of the group, which left them in good stead for the games to come. Next came the game against Traviesos and this proved to be a comfortable game for Chula Vista, winning 6-1 and guaranteeing their place in the quarter-final of the 2018 Cal South Adult State Cup.
The final group match between Chula Vista FC and San Nicolas FC was to see which team progressed as group winners and it was San Nicolas FC who came out on top. However, Chula Vista FC advanced to the knockout stages knowing the most important matches were still to come, and the opportunity for revenge could be just around the corner.
Chula Vista FC was drawn with Santa Ana Winds FC in what turned out to be arguably the most entertaining match of the whole tournament. There were a total of 9 goals scored in the game, with 5 of them going to Chula Vista FC and Santa Ana Winds FC lost their cool, having two players sent off during the match. Oscar Hernandez was the star man for Chula Vista FC, bagging a hattrick.
Into the semi-final, and Chula Vista FC were once again in outstanding goalscoring form, playing both winning and entertaining football. The match ended 6-3 in favor of Chula Vista FC, and it was the turn of Alejandro Lopez to take the match ball home having scored a hattrick.
Into the final and Chula Vista FC advanced with plenty of confidence and who should be waiting in the most significant match of them all? None other than San Nicolas FC, who would have been feeling very confident ahead of the game having won the group game between the two teams.
However, the pressure of playing in a final is different from that of the last group game, when both teams have already progressed, and so it proved.
In the first half, a great through ball freed Chula Vista FC forward Alberto Diaz and he went through unchallenged before dinking the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to open the scoring. San Nicolas FC came out with a determined attitude in the second half and struck the equalizer through Abraham Villon.
It would have been easy for Chula Vista FC to allow their heads to drop but they responded well and a moment of brilliance from Alberto Diaz sealed the game. Diaz picked the ball up on the left wing, advanced into the penalty area before beating his man and curling a delightful effort into the top right corner.
The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Chula Vista players, staff and fans. All the opposition could do was sit back and applaud what a tremendous goal and one which deserved to win the 2018 Cal South Adult State Cup it was.
Chula Vista FC will now advance to play the 2018 USASA Region IV Amateur Cup. They will travel to Denver, Colorado, to play the State Cup Champions, Azteca FC. The winner will play San Nicolas FC for the 2018 USASA Region IV Amateur Cup Championship, as they have defeated the State Cup Champions from Arizona, Real Jalisciense 4-0 on Saturday, May 12th at Silverlakes Soccer Complex.
