Chula Vista FC’s MLS Next Program: A Rising Force in Youth Soccer.

Chula Vista FC’s MLS Next program continues to establish itself as a formidable force—both now and for the future.

This season, the club’s MLS Next teams have proven that with hard work, dedication, and a strong developmental structure, they can compete toe-to-toe with some of the most established programs in the country, including MLS giants like LA Galaxy and LAFC, as well as top-tier international academies such as Barca Academy.

The results speak for themselves:

  • The U19s currently sit at the top of the Southwestern (South) Division.
  • The U15s remain undefeated in league play, trailing just behind Barca Academy.
  • The U17s boast a winning record and are only three points behind division leader Barca Academy.
  • The U14s have compiled a solid 18-8-3 record (note: official standings are not kept for U13 and U14 in MLS Next). Impressively, this same 2011 group finished last season with a remarkable 28-2-2 record as U13s.

When asked about the key to this sustained success, Technical Director Eden Esquerre shared,

“The previous work we’ve done with this group has been crucial. It’s much easier to build when you’ve already laid a strong foundation. Most of our U19 players have been with us for several years—seven of them for over four years. That long-term development makes a big difference.”

Player and parent commitment to the process—and their loyalty to the club—have been vital to the program’s rise. Equally important is the exceptional coaching staff that drives the development from the sidelines.

Leading the charge are head coaches Isaac Valencia, Jose Antonio Govea, Fernando Mares, Technical Director Eden Esquerre, and Academy Director Jose Hector Diaz. Supporting them is a talented team of assistant coaches: Alberto Diaz, Jesse Lopez, Hernan Maldonado, Ricardo Morfin, Isella Olvera, Ismael Vidrio, and Erick Cortinas. Rounding out the staff are goalkeeper coaches Ricardo Villalva and Carlos Arce, whose specialized training continues to elevate the performance between the posts.

With a clear vision, a culture of excellence, and a deep bench of coaching talent, Chula Vista FC’s MLS Next program is not just competing—it’s thriving.
