Chula Vista FC’s MLS Next Head Coaches, Fernando Mares and Jose Antonio Govea, obtained their USSF B License. Motivated by the club’s goal to encourage coaches to seek higher coaching education and their own desire to better themselves as coaches, both Mares and Govea went ahead and successfully were able to achieve it.
Mares, who already holds the Mexican Soccer Federation’s Technical Director license, described his experience: “It was a very interesting course for me because the US emphasis is different than in Mexico. Here is a more emphasized on a general structure, and in Mexico, it depends basically on each coach. Also, the facilities are better here.” Mares is willing to go forward and pursue his A license, but he will wait to see if CONCACAF follows through with the plan to create a unified license which will make his Mexican license valid throughout the entire confederation.
Govea also described his experience taking the class: “I thought it was thought provoking in terms of creating specific and concise objectives during training sessions. It also challenged me to create arguments that defend my principles as a coach and help formulate my philosophy as a coach. I created new friendships with peers from around the country and learned about their playing style and methodologies. Nice to see the shared similarities and differences between one another.”
Chula Vista FC’s Academy Director, Jose Hector Diaz, was delighted to see both Mares and Govea obtain the B license. Diaz said: “The type of coach we are seeking is someone who consistently strives to improve themselves and their abilities. We value action over words, and the best coaches are the ones who quietly work towards becoming the very best they can be. Both coaches are club alumni who played at the club and are now setting an example for future generations of coaches. I am excited for Jose Antonio, Fernando, and our players to benefit from it.”
Chula Vista FC expects more of its coaches to follow Mares’ and Govea’s steps to better their coaching skills and experience in the near future.
