It seems like yesterday when Chula Vista FC lifted the Cal South Adult State Cup but the players, coaches and fans are about to try and repeat the moment on year later. The final of the 2019 Cal South Adult State Cup is due to take place on Saturday 27th April at Citrus College, with kick-off at 8:00pm local time.
Chula Vista FC will play Mesoamerica, a team participating in their first Adult State Cup.
Not only is there the pride of winning the tournament at stake but also significant prize money. The winner of the final will receive $32,000, which is a fantastic sum of money. The cash can be invested in the club, with training facilities and equipment among the things that could benefit from the funds.
However, first and foremost is the glory of winning the trophy and if successful, it will be the second time in succession Chula Vista FC have held aloft the Cal South Adult State Cup.
Experience is certainly on the side of Chula Vista, with several squad members from last season involved again in this campaign. Arguably the most important players in the team are Manuel Carrillo and Angel Gonzalez. Much of the credit goes to the attacking players, which is usually the case in most soccer tournaments around the world but a special mention must go to the central defensive duo.
Carrillo and Gonzalez were present in the final last season and played in both the quarter-final and the semi-final of the Cal South Adult State Cup this season. They have formed a formidable partnership at the heat of the Chula Vista FC defence and have helped the team to keep three clean sheets in the competition, including one in the quarter-final against Miran FC.
The feeling of having a good defence behind you means the attacking players can play with confidence and that’s become apparent with the number of goals scored. Chula Vista FC have scored 16 goals in the Cal South Adult State Cup this season, which is a fantastic total. 10 of the goals came in the group stage, with an additional 6 goals coming in the quarter-final and semi-final.
Chula Vista FC have averaged 3.2 goals per game during the tournament and know if they can maintain that average into the final, it will surely be good enough to see them win the cup again this season.
The main goal scoring responsibility in the final will fall on the shoulders of Alberto Diaz. The current Adult CalSouth Player of the Year scored both goals in the final last year to secure a 2-1 victory and his performance will be key. Diaz scored one of the goals in the quarter-final but the good news is the team are not reliant on him to get all the goals.
Sergio Zamudio stepped up in the semi-final with two goals from midfield and it is good to know there are players throughout the team who can find the back of the net when required. Youngster, Ernesto "Moe" Espinoza also got on the scoresheet in the quarter-final with an excellent goal against Miran FC and provides an additional attacking threat. He is one of the up and coming players in the competition and a name to look out for, not only in the final this season but for many years to come. Oscar Hernandez has also provided several vital assists in the previous two games.
Interestingly, there are seven players from the team which started the 2018 final who are likely to begin the match this year. Jorge Gomez, Angel Gonzalez, Manuel Carrillo, Sergio Zamudio, Alberto Diaz, Francisco Ramirez and Oscar Hernandez all started both the quarter-final and semi-final this season and are sure to be in the manager’s plans for the final.
This shows great continuity and the players know each other’s game very well. Again, the centre-back pairing of Carrillo and Gonzalez is a good example and this is replicated throughout much of the starting XI.
With the opponents playing in their first Adult State Cup, Chula Vista FC have experience on their side and that could make all the difference in the final.
