2019 Adult State Cup Begins with Local Derby

February and there is a lot of excitement surrounding this year’s competition.  With 16 teams registered to participate, the total prize fund is $32,000 and the winner gets to take home the lot.

There are also prizes for the runner-up, which is $10,000, third place will receive $5,000 and fourth place will take home $3,000.  However, the big prize is for the winner and the money, coupled with the title of Cal South Adult State Cup winner 2019 makes this a tournament every team is determined to win.

The competition will be tough and Chula Vista FC have been placed in a group with Rebels SC, Kern County Mustangs FC and Deportivo San Juan.  The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stages, with the winners of each group playing a runner-up from a different group, so there is all to play for in every match.

After tasting success last year, Chula Vista FC are the defending champions and every team in the competition will be looking to get one over the current holders of the cup.  Perhaps the most eagerly anticipated match of the group stages will see Chula Vista FC meet local rivals, Rebels SC.

Rebels SC have been working at youth level but now have an adult team which has links to Chula Vista.  The Rebels SC coach is Matt Emmert, the former staff coach at Chula Vista FC and involved in the run to the second round of the US Open Cup in 2017.  So, there is plenty of local spice to this match and both teams will want to impress each other.

However, Chula Vista have the advantage of experience, having won the Adult State Cup last year and that could prove crucial in this game.  Anything can happen in local derbies but Chula Vista have the quality and knowhow to get the job done and make a successful start to the defence of their title.

There are only three matches for each team in the group, with the teams playing each other once so there is little room for error.  Following the game against Rebels SC, Chula Vista FC will meet Kern County Mustangs in their second game before finishing the group stages with a game at Deportivo San Juan.

Two of Chula Vista’s matches are played away from home, which is a bit of a disadvantage but should not prevent them from making it to the quarter-final.  Each of the knockout stage games will take place at SilverLakes Park, so there is no advantage to any of the teams left involved.

Defending a trophy is always tough but Chula Vista FC have a great match to begin the campaign at the home of local rivals Rebels SC and that should provide plenty of motivation to get things off to a great start.
